摘要:
Our search for mutations that affect gravitational responses in Drosophila identified several novel genes. These genes were named after astronauts in recognition of our support from NASA. One of these genes, named
jim lovell (
lov), encodes a transcription factor of the BTB/POZ family.
lov is expressed in many subsets of neurons and
lov mutations affect several types of behavior. However,
lov has proved to have other unexpected roles. The massive growth of Drosophila larvae is associated with endopolyploid growth rather than growth through mitosis. An unusual larval behavior associated with
lov RNAi knockdown has led to the finding that
lov is required for this endopolyploid growth. Our work on dissecting the molecular basis of this role for
lov will be discussed.
